Dragon Seed by Marty Machowski Book Review

Nick, an angry teen, uncovers a dark secret about his family and, along the way, discovers his place in a story of epic proportions. In Dragon Seed, trusted author Marty Machowski uses both imaginative fiction and an engaging, twelve-lesson Bible study to introduce older children and teens to spiritual warfare.

Marty Machowski is the Family Life Pastor at Covenant Fellowship Church in Glen Mills, Pennsylvania, where he has served on the pastoral staff for over 25 years. Marty leads Promise Kingdom, the children's ministry of Covenant Fellowship. He is the author of a systematic theology for children entitled "The Ology," "Long Story Short," "Ten-Minute Devotions to Draw Your Family to God," "The Gospel Story Sunday School Curriculum" and the companion "Gospel Story Children's Bible." He and his wife, Lois, and their six children reside in West Chester, Pennsylvania area.

My Thoughts:

I was immediately drawn to this book because I recognized the author. He wrote one of my favorite kids Bible “The Gospel Story Bible”. I have many treasured memories sharing God’s word with my children while reading this Bible to my kids.

This book is in an allegory format. The book and plot makes this story a page turner.

The age range would be more appropriate for a pre-teen and teen. The content may not be appropriate for all families who aren’t ready to introduce the spiritual world to your kids. This reminds me of the Frank Perritti books that I read many years ago except for the allegory format.

Nick is very disrespectful and even rebellious to his mother. This may or may not be something you want to introduce your teen to. If you have a teen that is rebellious it might be a good book for them to read.

The characters are very realistic and could be a kid in your neighborhood or maybe in your family. It definitely shows the differences of family dynamics and a stark realization of how different each child in a family is in personality and how they handle situations.

This is a good versus evil story plot as Nick’s very soul becomes a battlefield. Nick receives an old book that has been passed down from his great grandfather. The book, “Dragon Seed” opens up his family history and he finds an ancestor who like him was very angry. It’s quite intriguing.  Nick struggles to come to terms with the lost of his father. He sees a avenue out of his pit that has dragged him down so low. Will Nick receive the only redemption we have through Jesus?

The book has a lot of Biblical references. The main story that I see that the story deals with sin and how it affects us. At the same time it shows God’s love and grace and he is waiting for use to turn to Him for complete healing and salvation.

At the back of the book there is a section called, “The Antidote” The secret to uprooting the seed of the dragon. It is what the author calls a 12 day prescription. This is a very detailed Bible study that can be done individually, as a family, or in a group setting.

Overall, this was a decent story.
